Chapter 10

Sky

“I was sipping wine at a local pub with Vera when breaking news hit the television mounted above the bar,” I tell Isla, who’s looking at me with as much suspicious relief as I’m feeling. Luckily, the film crews are focused on the remaining contestants’ interviews, Opal included, and I’m parked on Isla’s hotel room sofa. “I couldn’t believe what I heard, but I’m not sure if I believe it.”

Isla pulls me into a hug, linking her hands around my back. “I’m questioning everything, but, right now, I feel freer than I’ve ever felt. Like we could actually have time to focus on us instead of some mysterious malevolent force.”

“Believe me, I feel the same.” I ease her back, staring at her face, which gathers emotions I can’t quite make out. But I understand the turmoil. I’ve been a target as much as she has. If my uncle is willing to back off, and Sandy’s killer has been caught, perhaps this guy is also linked to Jed’s murder. “I just hope the investigators can get to the bottom of who’s behind both Jed and Sandy’s deaths and we can move on with our lives.”

Isla sighs and her gaze takes on a far-off look. “Apparently, several of the crew revealed to interviewers that Sandy had been caught rummaging through people’s wardrobes in the past, as reported on the news. They gave no information as to why, but she seemed to favor animal prints.”

“She was a shifter,” I point out.

“True,” Isla agrees. “But still, I can’t believe that Larry was caught with the murder weapon, clothes, and confessed to killing Sandy. Why would he confess, knowing he’d land in the tomb? Was he threatened or made afraid by what he saw? His actions, if they turn out to be true, make my belly roil. He’ll never know just how scared we were. He killed Sandy, but potentially harmed thousands who’ll be weary of the park. It’s a damn shame.”

Shaking my head, I’m also disgusted. But then a thought slips past my lips. “Do you think the person who paid Jed could be the one behind this other man’s motivation?”

“You mean he was paid, or benefited by taking the fall? Like the poacher was? Nothing surprises me. But, for some, incarceration is a blessing. For now, I just want to enjoy the time we have. We haven’t had time together without fear of being torn apart.”

I take a sip of my wine, then clink my glass to her champagne flute. “I’ve made a decision. It’s not right that I’ve kept away from you, fearing repercussions. I’ve purposely put off having a one-on-one date with you because I didn’t want to widen the target on your back. But I haven’t heard from my uncle. A killer is behind bars. Triston has made arrangements for me to meet with Dean Burkett, the executive editor of the New York Times in the morning. I was going alone, but now I don’t want to. My future rests on this interview, and I want you there with me.
